Reaction Roles

Reaction Roles let your members assign themselves roles by reacting to a message. You link an emote to one or more Discord roles, and Aleeva takes care of adding and removing them.

Legacy feature

Reaction Roles is a legacy feature. It stays available and keeps working, but it is not being extended.

It will be replaced by Interaction Roles, a new feature with better support. It is announced in What's new once it arrives.

How it works

Aleeva posts (or adopts) a message and adds the configured reactions to it. When a member reacts, Aleeva looks up the emote, checks the reaction role's type and assigns or removes the linked roles.

Each reaction role has a type that decides what a reaction does:

  • Toggle. Reacting adds the linked roles, removing the reaction takes them away again.
  • Add only. Reacting adds the linked roles. Aleeva removes the reaction again so the message stays clean.
  • Remove only. Reacting removes the linked roles, and the reaction is removed again as well.

You can also restrict a reaction role to a single choice. With "Allow only one role" active, Aleeva removes the member's other reactions on that message when they pick a new one, so they end up with exactly one role from that set.

Setup

Open the setup with . You have to be the owner of the server or have the Aleeva Administrator permission. Choose "Reaction Roles" from the selection menu.

The overview lists every reaction role on your server with its channel and its reactions. A red dot marks a reaction role whose message Aleeva can no longer see or that was deleted.

From there you can create a new reaction role, import one from an existing message, or edit and delete the ones you already have.

Creating a reaction role

Aleeva walks you through the configuration:

  1. Name. Used to identify the reaction role in the overview.
  2. Message. Either link an existing message with a Discord message link, or have Aleeva create a new one. For a new message you can provide plain text or a Discohook.org share link, which Aleeva imports as a rich embed.
  3. Type. Toggle, add only or remove only.
  4. Allow only one role. Decides whether members can hold more than one role from this reaction role.
  5. Reaction mappings. For each reaction, set the emote, the roles it grants and its order.

You get a preview of the finished message before Aleeva creates it.

Reactions

A reaction consists of an emote, one or more linked roles and an order number. Reactions are sorted ascending starting from 1, and Aleeva adds them to the message in that order.

For the emote you can use a standard emoji, a custom emote from your server, or any icon from the Aleeva Icon Set.

Importing from an existing message

"Import from message" takes a Discord message link and turns that message into a reaction role. Aleeva picks up the reactions that are already on the message, so you only have to link the roles.
